Withings Thermo Smart Temporal Thermometer Review
The Withings Thermo is a Smart Temporal Thermometer that is medically approved and makes taking your entire family’s temperature quickly and accurately.
The Thermo is completely non-invasive and is a must-have for anyone with a newborn, toddler or family. This beats trying to shove a thermometer under the armpit of your toddler any day. All it takes is a quick swipe of the forehead and you’ll have an accurate reading within a couple of seconds. Since there isn’t any transfer of saliva, earwax or body fluids, it’s safe to take readings from different people one after another in succession.
My twin 4 year olds were recently feverish from preschool and using the Thermo was time saving and allowed me to take their temperatures at nauseum for the duration without annoying them in the slightest.
Operating the Thermo
Operating the Withings Thermo is about as easy as it gets, just remove the protective circular rubber cover, press the button to turn it on, place in the middle of your forehead, press button then slowly drag it from the center of your forehead to your temple, the unit will vibrate once it’s completed it’s scan. The digital LED display will show you your temperature reading. You can also swipe upwards near the rounded side and assign it to one of the profiles, the Thermo will display a reference color code LED Green, Amber or Red for normal, elevated or high respectively based on the age of the user.
Body temperature variations can alter your reading so physical activity, coming in out of the cold, just after a bath, while crying. These types of scenarios can change the reading so it’s best, especially for infants to take 2-3 readings in a row. The patient should remain calm and in the same ambient temperature that the Thermo is located for 15 min before taking a reading.
You’ll want to hold onto the box as it makes for an appropriate and safe place to store your Thermo. The only thing I would have loved to have seen is a holster. Yes like a gun holster so I can keep it handy when the kids are sick.
The App
The companion app is very useful and can store a profile for each of the 8 users that the Thermo can support. It will keep a history of your readings so can you examine at a later time. You can assign a temperature reading to a profile by swiping up on the Thermo after you get the result and selecting a profile name. The app and the Thermo sync up automatically so just fire up the app, turn on the Thermo and the reading will be transferred to your app so you can document your findings. It can also based on age, fever history and symptoms the Thermo app gives an interpretation of the reading.
You add symptoms or comments and even photos so you have a journal of your ailments that you can keep for reference or show to your doctor. Boston Children’s Hospital even provides Thermia; educational information on proper medications and dosages.
HotSpot Sensor™ Technology
The Withings HotSpot Sensor™ Technology uses 16 infrared sensors to take over 4,000 measurements each time you swipe to take a reading. The sensor takes its’ readings from the temporal artery considered to be the best place to detect temperature changes.
The sensor is located at the center of the cone shape inside the Thermo, the green rubber cap keeps the sensitive area free from debris when not in use. You are able to change from Celsius to Fahrenheit with a simple swipe upwards on the dotted led line to the right or near the rounded side of the device.
The Withings Thermo runs on two AAA alkaline batteries making it easy to find and something you probably already have in your home. I dislike having to run out and search for watch batteries or CR2023 style batteries.
Conclusion
The Withings Thermo Smart Temporal Thermometer is the next generation of Thermometers for consumers and a must-have for anyone with small children or family. The Thermo is completely non-invasive and connects to the Withings companion app via WiFi or Bluetooth for your own personal medical journal and even gives advice from Boston Children’s Hospital. A tad pricy but taking your temperature can’t get much easier and sanitary than with the Withings Thermo, I highly recommend the it.
