Gone are the days when the owners of flashy gas-guzzlers would roll their eyes when Priuses went putt-putting by. Thanks to Tesla, now every demographic wants an electric vehicle, and automakers are paying attention. Bentley announced that all its vehicles would be electric or hybrid by 2026; now, even Ferrari is working on an e-car. Ferrari! Which luxury brands are making electric supercars? If you’re an enthusiast, you can’t go wrong with these.
Aston Martin
As always, Aston Martin can count on some flashy publicity for its first fully electric vehicle, the Rapide E: Daniel Craig will be driving it as James Bond in October’s No Time To Die. The company is only making 155 units for the $330,000 car, but those drivers will be able to take advantage of 612 horsepower that can go from 0 to 60 in four seconds and drive 200 miles on one charge.
Porsche
Supercar connoisseurs were already excited about Porsche’s upcoming 718 Cayman GT4 RS, a two-seater starting around $130,000, so the new Taycan is just the electric icing on the automotive cake. The car, formerly known as the Mission E, has a range of 310 miles on a single charge. Porsche was planning 20,000 units for the model’s first year but reported that they already had more than 30,000 reservations.
Jaguar
For buyers looking for opulence and prestige, the I-Pace delivers premium luxury with a greener profile. It’s a high-end challenger for Tesla, with futuristic styling and top-of-the-line interiors. Driving it is reputed to be an actual thrill; you won’t get any putt-putting out of this striking supercar.
Nio
Some are calling this company the “Tesla of China,” and it’s certainly taking advantage of any attention-getting opportunities. Its electric EP9 boasts everything you could want in a supercar, like double the downforce of a Formula 1 racer. It’s supposed to deliver an F-22 fighter pilot experience, and did we mention that it’s autonomous? The EP9 has already made the news with a record for the fastest lap driven by an autonomous car. At least six of these have sold for $1.2 million each.
Aspark
The Japanese company has engineered the fastest fully electric hypercar in the world, the Owl. It goes from 0 to 60 in less than 1.7 seconds. Are owls even fast? Who cares! This Owl has cool scissor doors that open vertically. If you didn’t get your money down, it’s probably too late. Aspark said it was producing just 50 of these cars at a price tag of $3.6 million each.
Rimac
When you’re talking about luxury brands that are making electric supercars, you have to admit that this Croatian company has style. In 2011, they presented the Concept One, an all-electric masterpiece that could top 220 miles per hour for $1 million. Now the C Two has arrived with double the price tag and some niceties that big spenders didn’t even know they wanted. Its facial recognition system can open the car’s doors and start the engine. It also has a face scanner that can detect your mood. Stressed? Angry? The C Two will play soothing music for you. They sold out of all 150 models within three weeks.
