On a snowy afternoon, I drove to Virile Heart & Heritage in Waldwick, NJ to get a shave and a haircut. I had never heard of this town before but I am happy and lucky I went to Waldwick because Adam Reyes, the coolest barber in NJ and owner of the first Virile Barber & Shop has his business there. The Waldwick location will turn 8 years come September. Currently there are 3 locations and a fourth one on its way opening up in March 5th in Morristown, NJ. Two are located in Jersey City and the flagship store is in Waldwick, NJ.
I had the pleasure of meeting Adam, originally from Jersey City of Cuban descent, and learned more about him, Virile and the Virile products. I also got a chance to meet the rockabilly hipster team working that day and they all seemed sweet.
The Shop
As I walked in to the shop I couldn’t help to notice all the unique decor and antique barber chairs that filled up the space. One can tell lots of thought and time was put into the interior, which makes this place stand out. Adam told us more about the design process:
I tried to keep the interior as true to the 1800’s era as possible. I love that beaten up look with intricate detail and the story that each antique tells.
Over the years it has kept evolving and I think it has just become uniquely its own style.
The Cut
Besides the barber & shop looking sharp Adam’s technique while cutting my hair, shaving and trimming my beard was amazing. I couldn’t believe how precise he was while shaping up my beard. Every recommendation he made regarding how to cut my hair was on point and just the way I always wanted it but didn’t know how to describe it. Finally someone understood my look! I do have one I believe 🙂
