You’ve already got your trench coat, but what about a cool jacket you can wear for work or play. Who needs a gas station shirt for a crossover, this is performance rain gear for the outdoors man that’s cool enough for the street. The Carhartt Bad Axe is Bad Ass for Spring 2013 and has triple stitching with fully taped seams to prove it.

Over the course of the past couple of months, we have had the opportunity to put this jacket to the test and it did not disappoint. We’ve had some heavy rains in the East this past couple months and the Bad Axe keeps you completely dry. This jacket not only looks good, it’s durable, fully waterproof and complete with waterproof zippers.

A drop tail waist, storm flaps along the zipper backs and triple-stitched main seams ensure that you remain dry even in the heaviest of downpours, at least from your waist up.

Whisking and releasing moisture away from your body is crucial to maintaining body temperature in less than favorable conditions; campers, skiers, survivalists know it and you should too. The Bad Axe is constructed of Carhartt’s Storm Defender 3-layer breathable nylon membrane allows your jacket to remain completely breathable with full side zips, essential for any performance outdoor gear.

A Tapered wrist cut allows for more convenient movement and less friction where you rub while heavy duty nylon reinforces high stress or friction areas such as across the shoulders, at the cuff, elbows and at the hem. Two front slash pockets and an inside pocket securely hold your personals while the breast pocket has a media port on the inside for your earphones.

Carhartt Bad Axe Men's raingear outer wear review, roll away hood

The Bad Axe jacket is unlined, so you’ll need to layer up on colder days. The cut is relaxed for agile movement. Extremely durable but lightweight and cool enough for everyday men’s outer wear. A convenient hood rolls away into the collar with a secure strap to hold it down in place.

I have grown quite attached to my Bad Axe and when the zipper broke I was upset, but Carhartt’s policy is to replace or have repaired at the customers’ discretion any jacket that has a zipper issue and shipped out a replacement to me right away.

Conclusion

As a guy you can never have too many jackets but that doesn’t mean I want to buy the same one over and over; the Bad Axe is rain gear you’ll have for years to come, it’s fully waterproof, very durable and well worth the scratch. The jacket is unlined so you’ll need to layer up underneath it in colder temps, but very wearable as a work, camping or hunting jacket and great for casual outer wear on the street as well.

Only available in black, but it’s the only color I need.
