A Review of the Samsung Galaxy Mega with 6.3 inch screen
The public has been clamoring for larger screens and Samsung has delivered. Phablets are here to stay. The Galaxy Mega is currently the largest screen you will find on the smartphone in the US market at 6.3 inches.
The Galaxy Mega packs a 1.7GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 cpu with 1.5GB of RAM. The 6.3 inch display is capable of only a 720p 1,280×720 resolution at 233ppi but still looks great for reading text and movies. You’re provided 16GB of onboard storage. The micro SD card slot cleverly resides on top of the micro sim card slot and will allow you 64GB of additional storage space.
A 3200 mAh provides you with up to 420hrs of standby and 10 hrs of talktime over 3G. The Mega is equipped with a front firing 1.9MP camera for video conferencing and dual picture mode and a rear firing 8MP camera captures images at 3264×2448 pixel resolution and shoots 30fps 1080p video.
It may not be the fastest or the highest in resolution but we doubt you will notice it much. Mobile devices are being produced at an intense pace as technology provides. So having the latest greatest is nice, but it usually only marginally better and will typically be replaced by a newer-faster-bigger-better-stronger one in 6-12 months time anyway.
To be honest, holding the Mega up to my ear and making a call in public the first few times feels slightly odd. The Mega is huge, with a screen size of 6.3 inches, I can’t help but feel a bit Romper room. Forget about privacy, people tend to look or read over your shoulder, but it’s hard not to look over when the screen is that large. On the flipside, Retina display or no, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c with a 4 inch screen seems ridiculously tiny at this point.
The Galaxy Mega isn’t a gamer, if your looking to do intense online multi-player gaming with your Mega, you’ll notice some stuttering. This is a device for all those people who can’t stand a tiny screen and want some sort of reader but not a tablet.
I enjoy using a tablet but I also feel that most tablets are too large for me to want to carry around on a daily basis. The Galaxy Mega while huge, in terms of reading allows me to have a reasonable size to look at, while still being able to fit into the jacket pocket of my suit.
The Android OS works in landscape mode as well as portrait for your home page, which is really nice not having to tilt the device to portrait then back to landscape to launch items not on your multi-window bar. There’s no stylus on the Galaxy Mega, so if you’re looking for the option to use a pen, you’ll need to check out the Galaxy Tab 3.
How many times have you said, It would be nice if the tablet had a phone (often times like the UK counterparts), at least I have… Well this one does! It fits in your blazer pocket, gives you enough real estate and lightweight enough to hold for extended periods of time. I find it to be very comfortable to hold in landscape when playing a game or watching video. It’s roughly about the size of a console controller for a game system, only flatter.
Samsung Galaxy Mega is available on AT&T only for $299 with a 2 year contract
