From Elgar Johnson, the Menswear Editor of i-D and former assistant to Simon Foxton, this STYLED is a collection of overtly-military looks created with a range of product – from FilMelange and Christopher Shannon to Alexander McQueen and Rick Owens.
Elgar client’s list includes Stone Island, Moschino and Nike.
Born in Peterborough, he initially left school to work for his dad’s heavy haulage company. After falling into modeling Elgar was “adopted” by Simon Foxton and welcomed into his new family, which included Jonathan Kaye and Jason Evans.
Elgar’s career at i-D started after ‘a meeting with Terry and Tricia in their very nice kitchen’.
A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Art, the Belgian-born Martin Margiela founded Maison Martin Margiela in 1988 before showing his first women’s ready-to-wear collection for spring/summer 1989.
While his work is closely associated with the deconstructionist fashion movement of the 1980s, it is characterised by a poetic appreciation of imperfection, personality and eccentricity; Margiela collections have been presented on tube platforms and street corners. He says of his work, ‘my main inspiration has always has been the extremities and changes of daily life.’
Although Martin left his eponymous brand in late 2009, his legacy is continued by a design team dedicated to furthering his vision.
