Despite grumbling from some and a distinctly unfortunate moniker, "murses" have officially entered the every man's lexicon. "That they are, essentially, purses is not a fact on which we will dwell," writes Guy Trebay in the New York Times. In his recent piece Trebay glosses over the man-bag's long history and series of incarnations while embarking on a search for his perfect murse. In the end, he finds it in a creation from Lambertson Truex (a company nearly killed this year by financial troubles before Tiffany's purchased them and subsequently put steam back in their engines). But while murses are fast become an accepted part of the modern male wardrobe, there's one accessory showing up en masse in London that might have a significantly harder time breaking into the mainstream.
According to the Telegraph, British men are bringing back the monocle—as in the singular eye-piece, not the eponymous culture rag. “Vision Express, a chain of opticians, is to start selling the lenses after an unexpected spate of requests for monocles.” While the company is still testing the waters to see if a full-on resurgence is possible, all signs point to it being “one of those inexplicable fashion things,” as Vision Express’ chief executive put it.
