Pinstripe Magazine’s interview with the international actress/singer Meital Dohan follows.
MARV: What’s your nationality?
MEITAL: I was born in a small village in Israel. Now I live in the not so small city of Los Angeles.
MARV: How long have you been in the US?
MEITAL: I came here to do Weeds, and decided I wanted to stay. I split my time between LA, New York + Tel Aviv.
MARV: So you split your time between all three, live and spend most of your time in LA, but any plans on solely living in NY?
MEITAL: I still have a place in NY so I’m there a lot, too. I try to avoid the east coast when the weather is vile,
cold and rainy.
MARV: Was it difficult adjusting to the LA scene?
MEITAL: Home is where the heart is, but I actually found LA to be very open. Of course there are plenty of people full of shit, but the music scene out here is very loving, nurturing and inviting. I feel lucky to have found my place in it all.
MARV: When did you start singing?
MEITAL: I was always singing in the shower. I wrote a song for a movie I was in once. And then a few years ago I started writing music, met a producer and it all just soared from there very, very quickly!
MARV: Did you always know you wanted to sing?
MEITAL: I think I’m a natural born performer, so I always knew I would try out different types of self expression and performance. I didn’t know how much fun singing and music were going to be until I started making them. From there it’s just history in the making.
MARV: What were you doing before you starting singing professionally?
MEITAL: I’ve been acting since I was in my teens. Theater first in Israel, and then I was nominated for the Israeli oscar for my film work. I kept myself quite busy here in the states and did Weeds, and then Woke up Dead with Jon Heder and Monogamy with Dana Adam Shapiro. I also wrote a book of poems called Love and other Bad Habits. I don’t like to waste any time.
MARV: Do you see any more acting in the future?
MEITAL: Yes, of course. I like to express myself through different art forms at different times, but I don’t want to ever give one up for the other. I believe you can live a full, artistic life by being focused but also varied in your output. I try to do that.
MARV: We saw the music video for Yummy…Were you really naked or wearing a bikini on set?
MEITAL: Hmmm…I’ll leave that one to your imagination!
MARV: Haha, OK… I do have a wild imagination!! So is the video being released in Europe uncensored or the same worldwide?
MEITAL: Yummy has been released worldwide on MTV. The whole world is now feeling pretty yummy.
MARV: Who came up with the concept of you wearing boxing gloves and beating everyone up?
MEITAL: I come up with most of my creative concepts and then work with my team to build upon them. The whole idea for the boxing gloves came out of my own interest with feminine empowement. Women can be so caught up with how to dress or how to act proper and ladylike. This video is subverting this idea and saying, being a real woman is about doing whatever you want – punching away all the stereotype of what we should be or how we should act.
MARV: So you have a new single On Ya featuring Sean Kingston… How did you hook up with him?
MEITAL: Cudda Love, whom I love, works closely with Sean and myself, so it was a pretty easy and natural connection. We just shot the music video and I’m really excited to put it out there soon!
MARV: If you had to compare your music to anyone who would it be?
MEITAL: Since my first single was released I’ve been compared to artists like Debbie Harry, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha. However, my album will aslo include electro pop dance tracks that have been compared to David Guetta, which I think is a great reference. The album will also have a more loungey, softer feel that people haven’t heard yet that I would compare to Portis Head and Massive Attack.
MARV: Who would you say your inspiration is in music and who do you listen to?
MEITAL: Dinah Washington, Air, Portis Head, Coco Rosy, Mena Simone
MARV: Do you prefer to be called Meital, Meital Dohan or just Dohan?
MEITAL: I don’t care…just don’t call me ‘bitch’ (laughs)
MARV: Is Meital Dohan your stage name or real name?
MEITAL: 100% authentic. If I had a family tree, it’d be on it.
MARV: So what else are you working on these days?
MEITAL: There’s a lot going on behind the curtain! Everything from recording new songs to filming music videos to working on a TV pilot. I’ve got my hands full and then some.
MARV: Any plans for a full album and if so when is it coming out?
MEITAL: I’m recording my album now and it will reach the world when its ready and perfect.
