How to Give Yourself a Buzz Cut

Buzzcuts are, next to an all-out shave is the easiest haircut to maintain, making them a perfect year-round look. The style has rich, powerful roots in history and pop culture, including being a military recruitment haircut and a reference to androgyny from Hollywood stars. However, cutting your hair may appear to be a recipe for disaster, but with the proper style, you may save a few dollars by doing it yourself. The buzz cut is one of the most classic haircuts for men, and it’s also one of the easiest to achieve at home. Without having to sift through year-old magazines at your local barbershop, you can give yourself professional-quality buzz cuts with a few simple tools and a little effort. Here’s how to go about it.

Pre-cut tips and tools

Before you start buzzing, you’ll need the following items: a good pair of hair clippers, attachment combs for the hair clipper, hair trimmers for detail work, comb (possibly the last time you’ll need one of these), mirror (or swing-arm mirror), a steady hand and a little patience, and the location of the nearest salon or barber in case of emergency. You should observe a hairdresser or barber conduct a buzzcut on YouTube or in person before giving yourself one. Keep a tight eye on what they’re doing. Keep an eye on how the clipper is moved up the head. To preserve your clothes, wrap yourself in a towel or just remove your shirt. Don’t hurry it; prepare yourself. To avoid making a mistake, go slowly and carefully.

Let Get Buzzin

It’s vital to have freshly cleaned hair before getting a haircut, just as when you go to the barber. This keeps the hairs in their natural state as they dry. Choose your desired length, but keep in mind that the shorter it is, the more difficult it will be to goof up or end up with an uneven outcome. If this is your first time, go easy on yourself: you can always trim more, but you can’t take anything away. Professionals recommend buzzing against the hair’s natural growth direction, forcing the hair upward as you cut it. By buzzing with the grain, you may be able to save some of the longer hairs from being clipped. It’s easiest to begin buzzing at the sideburns and work your way up.

How to do the clipping’s properly

For the Top

Begin cutting from the front to the rear, keeping the clipper guard flat on your forehead. Slowly lower the clipper down the center of the head, beyond the crown. Cut everything to just past the point where the head curves into the sides and repeat in strips until the entire top is clipped down. You may have to go over it a few times to make everything even; making a few passes from side to side can assist. Keep a close eye on the crown. Because hair grows circularly at the crown, you’ll need to buzz from every angle to get it all trimmed.

For the Sides

Beginnings at the sideburn region and clip up the head to just past the start of the buzzed-down top portion, keeping the clipper guard flat against the head. To achieve a seamless blend between the sides and the top, run the clipper in a straight line up past the point where the head begins to round at the top. The clipper will leave the head when it’s time to finish shaving. If there are any lines between the two portions, move the clipper outward in a scooping motion to blend them. Repeat on both sides in strips until finished, then go over any missed places.

For the Back

Place your hand or swing-arm mirror between the vanity mirror and the hand or swing-arm mirror. When looking into the hand mirror, keep your back to the vanity mirror for the greatest effects. You will be able to view the whole back of your skull as a result of this. Start buzzing from the bottom of your neck up the head till just past the clipped area on top, with the clipper guard flat against your head. Continue in a straight line up the head, as you did on the sides, letting the round of the top of the head give a natural blend. Repeat until the entire back is cut in strips.

Detailing and Clean Up

Taper the edges, Start at the sideburn and work your way up to the top of the ear, scooping the clipper out as you go. Continue on either side of the ear. Turn around and repeat the process on the back, moving the clipper up the back of the head and rocking it out at approximately ear level. Using your trimmer, you’ll now trim your sideburns. Shave the back of your neck in a line and thoroughly shave everything beneath for a professional look.
