Specs

The Double Nest Hammock comes in an attached pouch that hangs from the side of the hammock for convenient sack to hold various small items. The ends of the Hammock come with pre-installed a rope harness along with 2 aluminum  smaller sized gated carabiners attached to the rope harnesses, on either end of the hammock.

The Double Nest measures 9ft 4″ x 6ft 2″ giving you plenty of fabric to bring your lady into the hammock for some company. The Double Nest seams are triple stitched for maximum durability and packs away neatly into the attached compression sack. The carry weight is about 20oz or just over 1lb and measures about 4″ x 5″ when packed. Hammock straps, bugnet and rain fly are all sold separately.

Setting up and Packing up

When setting up the Double Nest Hammock, simply unclip the strap on the compression sack, open the draw string, unfold and hang. It’s that quick and easy. The pre-installed hammock harness makes it super easy to clip your biners to your tree straps without any extra hardware or rope. We used the Atlas XL to hang the Double Nest and it’s absolutely the easiest and quickest way to hang a hammock.

When packing the Double Nest Hammock, the easiest way I’ve found is to lay the entire unit stretched, fold one end in, end over end till you reach the center attached sack, pin it under your or knee then fold in the other side till the two bunches meet. You can then stuff each side, cinch the draw string and clip the compression straps together and you’re  done. Tear down and packing the hammock is a 5 min ordeal, if that.

Hammock Experience

A hammock is a great alternative to setting up a tent, especially if you’re a hiker where you may only be staying for a short period of time. It’s comfortable, so comfortable you might lose track of time. You’ve been warned.

You should probably be a couple or a blossoming one if you intend on using this for two since you’ll be intimately close to the other person. Spending the night in any hammock with two people might not be completely ideal since you’ll both gravitate towards the center of the hammock. That said, it does provide adequate surface area for two to sit or lounge out for a period of time.  My intent was to use this primarily as a single but then also have the option to add another person if necessary. There are larger hammocks out there but have a little bit too much weight and a little bit too much material for me.

If you’re using it as a single, think of it as a queen size hammock you can stretch out a bit more in. The extra material isn’t much of a hindrance, since the lightweight nylon bunches up nicely like a parachute. As an added bonus you get some more material that you can pull over to fully enclose yourself from the wind if necessary. It will also fit a sleeping bag easily..

Insect Shield

The Insect Shield label of course screams out at you and if you are unfamiliar with the technology, you’re in for a treat. The Double Nest material is treated with Permethrin through a binding process during production. Permethrin is a proprietary odorless insect repellent registered by the EPA that really works and is expected to last the lifetime of the product or up to 6 months of extended exposure to the elements. The expected lifetime I suppose depends on how much abuse and exposure to the elements you put to it. Your mileage may vary. The Insect Shield effectiveness is rated to last through 70 launderings.

Permethrin has been successfully used in the United States as an U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered product since 1977. Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel and Insect Shield® Repellent Gear were registered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 2003. Insect Shield® Repellent Apparel has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers, and midges (no-see-ums). Insect Shield® Repellent Gear has been proven and registered to repel mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and flies.

We got the chance to give the Double Nest Hammock’s Insect Shield repellant a run for a couple of weekends just before the cooler weather set in and the bugs were still very active. I have to say that the product really works! Our testing area consists of aggressive mosquitoes and within minutes of hanging the Double Nest, most if not all flying bugs nearby vacated the area immediately. Best bug repellent I’ve ever used hands down, I’m impressed!
