Oh dear, fashion! It’s truly an everchanging element of the modern world since literally every day, new styles are trending on the internet. As the years are going by, new ideas are emerging. Some are indeed praiseworthy while others make you stand firm in an awkward moment and wonder, “What’s that?”
Back in the days, clothes were meant only to cover the body. After a while, with industrial revolution and modernisation, styles started to appear. Today, you got a clothing for work, one for party, one for wedding, one for sleeping and the list goes on and on. Funny but that’s the reality of life. People have embraced fashion in their everyday life that there are even fashion styles for sleeping pyjamas and underwear. Of course, not to mention if it’s from a designer, the bills are going to be sky rocketing.
Fashion knew many eras. Would you fancy a voyage to the oldest civilisations and have a breakdown of their fashions? It will surely be entertaining!
Throwback to 3000 years BC when the citizens of Egypt were building their new monumental city. At those times, men fashion knew a whole new facet. Clothes were made out of linen, comfy enough for everyday works. For royal men or pharaohs, their clothes were carefully lined with embroidery and they even wore jewellery. Make up was not exclusively for women and was actually a status symbol. Popular fashion items included golden jewellery, light clothing, feathers and leaves. Till date, Ancient Egyptian fashion inspires many modern fashion derivations.
A few centuries later, the Romans and Greeks will be known as being fashion conscious as well. Men would wear clothing according to their status. Soldiers wore silver or golden coloured armours while religious individuals were always dressed in light clothes. Draperies were given high importance. For royals, light drapes made of cotton or linen would be considered. Much of Greek and Roman fashion resembled that of Egyptians but no one would be able to match a new fashion trend rising centuries later in India.
Men in India would adopt a new style in fashion. They would consider highly adorned clothes and headgears. While Ancient India was torn in war between numerous clans wanting to claim the country for themselves, they considered clothes that would not be difficult to fight in despite the fact that they would wear armours in war. Arts were given much value and, in this regard, those practicing various kinds of dances would have to wear unique clothing, makeups and items that would enhance the appearance of the performer. At the same moments, China would rise as a civilisation having a unique culture and fashion style.
Royal emperors would keep elongated head dresses as well as definite robes with exquisite patterns. They would be known to keep their moustaches long and be one of the first civilisations to value facial hair as part of their fashion. The clothes would indubitably change according to the profession of the wearer. Monks would wear lighter, simpler and plain clothes while samurais would wear bright and heavy gears.
With time, the world would know a more exquisite fashion styles and split them for different occasions. Pants and shorts would go trendy, hats would choose seasons to come out of the wardrobes and coats would see the light only in the darkness of winter. Well, even men should be stylish, isn’t it? If one day someone tells you that men fashion is not that complicated compared to women’s, make sure they know the histories behind men fashion!
