What Type Do You Want?
First, you need to figure out what type of car you want. Are you looking for something new and sexy that you can show off while you’re driving to and from work? Maybe you need something a little more practical for hauling groceries or kids to and from soccer practice.
Maybe you need something else, like a truck for moving lumber or a cargo van for work. What about a classic car or a project that you’re going to rebuild from the tires up? Take a close look at what type of vehicle you want to bring home before you start hunting for your next set of wheels.
Why Do You Need It?
Next, take a close look at why you need a new car. Having a single car with multiple drivers can be inconvenient at the best of times. If you’re adding a new driver, such as a teenager who’s recently obtained their license, you’ll likely need a new vehicle.
There are a thousand and one reasons why you might need a second car. Make sure you’re looking over each of them before you start shopping.
Can You Afford It?
Before you start shopping around, take a closer look at your own budget. Can you afford a second car? The exact details will vary depending on the answers to your first two questions, but in general, you don’t want to spend more than 10% of your gross annual income when you purchase a vehicle.
You also need to take into account the fact that you’ll be paying for registration, fuel, and maintenance costs for two vehicles now instead of just one.
What Features Are You Looking For?
What are you looking for in your secondary vehicle? Do you only need the basics or are you looking for all the bells and whistles? Do you want tools that will help a new driver stay safe behind the wheel? Maybe you’re looking for something to make your daily commute a little less tedious.
Whatever the case, there are so many feature options that it might be overwhelming when you start your research. Make a list of the things that you have to have. Anything else is just a bonus.
Are You Planning to Work On It?
Are you hoping to spend your weekends changing oil and carrying out basic car maintenance? Are you planning to bring home a project car you can rebuild?
If you enjoy working on cars or are planning on working on your second vehicle, make sure you choose a make and model that you’re familiar with. There are plenty of aftermarket mods you can install yourself, but you need to have a car that is easier to work on. Don’t plan on buying a Tesla and modding it.
Where Are You Going to Store It?
Finally, do you have somewhere to store this new vehicle? If you’ve got a two-car garage that isn’t totally obscured with junk or projects, then you’re good to go.
If you only have a one-car garage, or don’t have a garage at all, you’re going to need to think about where you’re going to store your new acquisition.
Considerations when Buying a Second Car
Whatever the reason and whatever the type of car you choose, make sure you’re doing your research and preparing properly to bring home your new vehicle. Don’t jump into the deep end of car shopping unless you’re sure you can swim.
