A Review of the Zyroshell Smartphone Cradle
I spend a lot of time behind the keyboard and typically I like to have my smartphone next to me listening to Howard Stern mainly but picking up the phone every few minutes checking notifications, emails or texting, sound familiar? It is fashioned with reusable, washable gel technology (that leaves no residue) to temporarily adhere your smartphone to the cradle. I don’t use it in my car since I enjoy it on my desk so much, but the ultra-thin flexible 2.4mm baseplate secures to any relatively flat surface, like a dashboard with a single arcing curve to it or even in your visor. The Zyroshell will heat up a bit if left in direct sunlight being that it is made from aircraft grade Aluminum (As stated by the company), so leaving this on your dashboard is probably not a good idea, best to take it down once you’ve gotten to your destination. The Zyroshell will not stick to some leather cases and TPU cases.
The Zyroshell is sleek, very sturdy and offers you 180 degrees of tilt in about 10 different angles of view. The movement from segment to segment when adjusting the angle feels solid and the hinge is devoid of ball bearings that will eventually wear and break down. Instead, it uses interlocking cogs inside to give you the different locking angles. It will also over-extend to what looks to be about 230 degrees.
I love the minimalistic design. It’s sturdy and works well. The Zyroshell car and desk cradle is constructed of aircraft grade Aluminum, which I’m always a sucker for! You are also provided with an Aluminum dustcap for the gel when not in use. The Zyroshell measures 55mm W x 91mm H x 17mm D, weighs 0.26lbs or 120g with the baseplate and can support up to 0.9 lbs or 400g.
The Zyroshell cradle is secured to most any flat surface with a baseplate that has a thin layer of gel and a round quarter sized magnet on it. There is also a recessed magnetic section in the bottom of the Zyroshell cradle that secures itself to the baseplate when placed on top of one another. As it is simply two circular shapes, you are free to rotate it at any angle just as you are able to place your device to the gel pad at any angle. This versatility allows you to fine tune your view virtually any way you like.
