Finally a Car that Flies: Terrafugia and the Transition Street-Legal Aircraft

Flying cars are no longer a thing of the future. Who needs wings to fly like an eagle when you can now just get into your car, drive and then take off and fly away.

The 2012 NY International Auto Show introduced the Terrafugia and the Transition Street-Legal Aircraft this week. The company name is Latin for “escape from land” and Terrafugia’s mission is the innovative expansion of personal mobility. Its unique design allows the Transition to fold its wings and drive on any surface road with a modern personal airplane platform. Once at the airport, the wings extend and the aircraft is ready for takeoff.

The 115mph flying speed and 490 miles flight range street-legal, Light Sport Aircraft is priced at approximate $279,000. You definitely will require a Sport Pilot license to fly this bad boy. First delivery is scheduled for late 2012 or early 2013. Click on the video to learn more and see the aircraft in action.
