Back to the future: the NEW DeLorean DMC-EV
Every guy remembers the popular 80s movies Back to the Future. The movie that brought the iconic car known as the DeLorean, to the public spotlight in 1985. The DeLorean has come back in the form of the DMC-EV and we applaud the way DeLorean Motor Company has kept to the traditional, if not almost identical aesthetics, which made the car as popular as John DeLorean was infamous. The innovative, gull-winged, cutting edge stainless steel design of the DeLorean DMC-12 was every guys’ dream car and now she performs the way she should but all electric!
The clever design of the car that is known as the DeLorean DMC-12 has stood the test of time. Maybe it’s the new technology or maybe a little nostalgia or the idea of this classic car performing the way it should have those decades ago. Whatever your reason, you should see the NEW DeLorean at the NY International Auto Show now till April 15th at the Jacob K. Javits Center in NYC.
Keeping with the original aesthetics of the car, stainless steel body and gull-wing doors, the NEW DeLorean DMC-EV looks identical and keeps the iconic look with a few upgrades that fans will appreciate. The DMC-EV can achieve a 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 125mph and it’s electric!
The original cutting edge gull-winged design of the DMC-12 lacked the proper powered engine which was a major complaint amongst owners of the futuristic stainless steel car. The NEW DeLorean DMC-EV is powered by a 400 volt AC induction liquid-cooled electric motor with Lithium ion battery packs giving 260hp at 5,000-6,000 rpm with 360 lb. ft of torque at 0-7,200 rpm and a max rpm of 14,000, which blows the original away in performance and it is zero emissions!
The DMC-EV uses a Flux (what else) Power LifePO4 battery with advanced control systems. A full charge will take you 2 hours from a 240 volt 70 amp DMC-EV Smart Charging Solution or about 3 to 4 hours from a 110v outlet. As with anything battery powered, your mileage will vary depending on your usage but what is particularly wonderful about the charging aspect is that you don’t need a traditional charging station. You can actually just plug it into your 110v outlet like any other electronic device you own to charge!
The DeLorean Motor Company was founded and owned by John DeLorean in 1975 and after some difficulties lets say, the DMC-12 sports car was finally produced between 1981-1982. The DMC-12 was brought to the spotlight in 1985 when it made it’s first of 3 appearances in the Back to the Future trilogy. Only about 9,000 of the DMC-12 sports cars were ever made and sold for about $25,000. The DMC-12 came in either a 5-speed manual or 3-speed automatic transmission with 130hp in the US and 150hp in EUR was able to achieve a 0-60 mph in 10.5 seconds, not a very good time to get to 80 miles per hour and jump back in time. The DMC-12 did 0-100 mph in about 40 seconds and the vehicles top speed was about 109 mph with a total curb weight of only 1,230 kg or 2,712 lbs.
If your lucky enough to own one of these pieces of nostalgia, the DeLorean Motor Company, located in Humble Texas can help you restore, convert, enhance and customize, even drop in an upgraded high-performance petrol engine for you or convert it over to an DMC-EV package!
Pinstripe Magazine got a chance to see the new Delorean up close at the NY International Auto Show on Wednesday and an opportunity to meet the CEO of the DeLorean Motor Company, Mr. Stephen Wynne.
We can’t wait to see what is in store from DeLorean Motor Company!
