With the recent release of "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps", guys now have their version of Sex & The City. Sartorially, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick faced quite a challenge – accurately updating the now iconic style of the original Wall Street (80’s power suits, contrast colored shirts, pocket squares, suspenders and slicked back hair) to reflect the environment right before and after the 2008 economic crisis.
The film opens with Gordon Gekko’s character reclaiming his belongings upon completion of his jail sentence. Among his HUGE cell phone, wallet and other items, you see his classic Cartier Santos watch. Many other iconic brands were chosen by the costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, to not only keep with the consistency of the first film but also keep consistent with the fashions of Wall Streeters today (Ellen was the CD on the first film as well).
Unlike the style in Sex in the City, where a $40,000 outfit worn by Carrie Bradshaw might be considered unrealistic (albeit fun!) the duds worn in WS2 are high-end and style icons, but are actually being worn today by bankers on the street. Check out Vacheron Constantin, the luxury Swiss watch brand, that was worn by Josh Brolin in the film and Belstaff – the classic outerwear brand that Shia LaBeouf wears in the movie.
