Active Travelers
Having a perfect holiday means different things for different people. If you are an active traveler, of course, your idea of a holiday isn’t lying down on a beach, taking a nap after nap in the sun. You want an adventure, something that gets your blood flowing and makes you feel exhilarated. If you want to discover a new destination where you can feel truly alive, here are a couple of ideas.
1. The Five Stans of the Silk Road, Central Asia
This unique adventure holiday takes you far away from the usual touristic routes. You will get to know five former Soviet republics (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan) in the course of three weeks. Turkmenistan will provide you with experience of seeing “Door to Hell” – the Darvaza gas crater that has been burning for 45 years. You will see numerous Islamic ruins on your way through the Silk Road, as well as traditional yurt camps throughout the countries. You will have tons of opportunities to make unique photos on this long and hard, but impressive holiday.
2. Cliff Camping, Colorado, the USA
Bored with sleeping indoor in a regular bed? Camping has become even more interesting on this Cliff Camping adventure in Colorado. You will go through Roosevelt National Forest, where you will have two choices: either to hike to the top of the mountain and then rappel down the cliff or try rock climbing. Whichever option you choose, you will definitely spend your nights hanging in a portaledge from a cliff. This unusual “accommodation” gives you the chance to enjoy unique views of Rocky Mountain Park.
3. Coastal to Highlands, Papua New Guinea
The adventure starts the moment you start off to Papua New Guinea, as it’s a remote island north of Australia. This island is only for adrenaline junkies, even though you can enjoy lying on a sandy beach. You can explore the highlands, snorkel in Kokopo, go river boating or take a strenuous hike to the village of Mt. Hagen. In other words, the wilderness of this beautiful island is mostly reserved for those who can’t be in the same place for long.
4. Safari in Tanzania
This is a special type of safari, as it gets pretty active. You can choose to on in a small group of 12 people or even less and first canoe through Momella Lake, then continue hiking into a former volcanic crater. Your next activity is to cycle through Lake Manyara National Park and then finish with a few common safari drives. No need to waste all of the time simply sitting near your tent and enjoying nature – explore Tanzania in more than just one way.
5. Tasmania, Australia
Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is a place where you can spend days exploring and enjoying. You can experience ancient rainforests and alpine heaths during long hikes to the famous Cradle Mountain and take incredible photos of glacial lakes and cold streams. You can also take a long walk along the Bay of Fires, 50 km long sandy beach where you’ll feel you’re completely alone. You can check out hiking trails like those in 3 capes hike, where you set off on a 3-day long journey which takes you through eucalypt forest, over log bridges, past amazing waterfalls and through thick rainforest. You’ll probably end up at Cape Hauy to be rewarded by watching the famous offshore sea stacks.
6. Etosha National Park and Skeleton Coast, Namibia
The excellent conservation management in this country allows you to enjoy Etosha National Park where you can spot black rhinos and cheetahs, as well as many other wild animal species in their natural environment. Your journey will then take you to the Skeleton Coast on the north, where you can admire sand dunes merging with the Atlantic. An adventure traveler will also enjoy sand sledding or sandboarding on the dunes, which are to be found in Swakopmund, west of the capital city of Windhoek.
7. Big Sur, California
Travelers and artists can’t get enough of the view on this coastline where the Pacific seems to become one with the Santa Lucia Mountains. However, be careful if you’re thinking of taking a swim there because it can get pretty dangerous even for the most experienced swimmers. The redwoods are a perfect place for a camping site, while the trail to Sykes Hot Springs is for those who enjoy real challenges. The popular Point Sur lighthouse can also be one of your destination spots on the hiking trail, where you will get to see the Esalen Institute, a place where you can relax in hot springs.
