With winter rapidly approaching, you may find that you haven’t checked off as much on your to-do list as you would’ve liked to. If this is the case, it may be time to start getting the necessary tasks out of the way before the temperatures begin to drop. Your garage is one of the first things you should focus on, which is why we’ve made a shortlist on how to prepare your garage for winter.
1. Make Any Repairs
Check to see if your concrete shows any signs of needing repair. If you find any cracks or spalling, moisture from future snowfalls may make them worse. Save yourself stress and money by tending to any repairs before the winter comes.
2. Waterproof the Door and Foundation
Prevent damage to items in your garage by waterproofing the area. To ensure full insulation, we recommend tending to the door as well as to the foundation.
3. Protect the Pipes
A burst pipe can lead to costly repairs as well as damage to the foundation and walls of your garage. If you have any pipes in your garage, you can do a few things to protect them, including:
- Always keep your garage door closed
- Having the proper insulation
- Keeping a space heater in your garage, near the pipes
4. Put Stuff Away
You naturally won’t want to risk letting certain items in your garage freeze this winter. Consider moving items such as paint, cleaners, or tools into your basement or attic during the cold months. If you don’t have this option, be sure to keep your garage warm so that nothing will freeze.
5. Lubricate Your Garage Door
You should ideally lubricate your garage door every few months or so. It’s especially important that you do this in the winter months to ward off any issues that may arise when you open or close your garage door.
